The jump!

Hello Jump!

Jump is actually a famous comedy martial arts play which will actually be held at the esplanade on this saturday and sunday. The main martial art the cast practised is Taekwondo. The cast is from korea and their performance is well-received in other countries as well. Their training for their performance is in fact really tough. They not only have to train up their taekwondo skills, they also got to do acrobatics. Some even said their taekwondo training is as hard if not tougher than their own country's taekwondo national team.

On thursday in fact, I got to meet them face to face at the workshop conducted at the ntc. They try to share with us how to do certain stunts such as forward backward roll and cart wheel. They then try to guide or help those who want to try advanced kind of cart wheel or rather like a flip in the air. Next, they showed and guided us how to do certain moves like in the play. One partner as the burglar attacking the other as the family member blocking dodging and counter attacking. They chose 4 best person out from those who picked up to perform and rewarded them with tickets for the concert.

Due to the upcoming performance they couldn't showed us more impressive stunts but what they did like flips and jumps in the air was nice enough for many to impress with. In the end, all had a group photograph and they posed for us to take photographs. No autographs or photographs as a group or individuals were allowed. The cast are actually quite cute people and they all looked really fit. The performance is funny and comical in its own ways and the acrobatics were really interesting.

The Taekwondo Strength

This video is quite amazing in a way that shows how the Taekwondo practitioner break planks and bricks with the various techniques and all his breaking requires breaking techniques that demonstrates great strength and accuracy and that this strength really comes from years of practice which is not just phyical strength but internal strength known as "ki".

True spirit of taekwondo shown at the world championships 2007

At the world taekwondo championships 2007 held at beijing, Spanish player Juan antonio ramos truly showed the Taekwondo spirit by enduring his injury and persist on playing in the match. He was fast and accurate in his kicks against his mexican opponent at the final of male fly which is the male 58 kg category. His turning kicks managed to let him score four points to one against his opponent and suddenly while he was trying to counter the slamming kick of his opponent, his knee got injured by the slamming kick. He started shouting out in pain and it was not over, his opponent continue with a turning kick to his face while he was bending down due to his pain but it did seemed that the opponent did pull back that kick after all, maybe he knew something was not right for ramos.

Ramos immediately fell to the ground holding his leg and covering his eyes for a while. The medics came in and attended to him spraying some pain killer on his knee. After a while, he got up and continued the game.
You could really see him in pain and later on he endured it not showing any sign of weakness of his injured leg as he still used it to attack and counter-attack.

Truly admirable spirit of perseverance which is greatly required not only in taekwondo but for all sports as well.

Catch Steven Lopez in action!

The undisputable champion

Steven Lopez is indeed US Taekwondo's pride! He has won another gold medal at the 2007 world Taekwondo Championships in Beijing, adding one more championship title to his achivement of his originally 3 world championships title and 2 olympic gold medals. Ever since 2001, he had been undefeated in any match and is recently being honoured by the U.S. Olympic Committe as its May athletes of the month.

His fourth straight world championship title also equal that of Korean legend Kook-Hyun Jeong, who is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for accomplishing the same feat. He won six straight matches to claim the 2007 title, defeating Korea’s Chang-ha Jang in sudden death overtime in the final match to claim the gold.

I guess Lopez would be getting ready to aim for his third Olympic gold medal which will also be held at Beijing in 2008.

Some students today...

Some students todays are really playful. And the playful ones are somehow always the boys. The strange thing is that these students like to stand real close to one another and in the process of kicking practice, they will kick each other. It seemed like it was accidental, after a while, they started grinning. The one who got kicked, will return back later when he got the opportunity. They also tend to ask more questions these days such as why like that? Why must be this way? Perhaps the instructor look friendly because there are instructors whose looks are real serious that students do not dare to do anything funny at all. Just the presence of such instructors, students suddenly become real disciplined.

However young and playful these kids are, i still think we can reason out with them. Perhaps they might not know understand what we are talking about, but by hearing these reasons, it seemed somehow it will have subconscious effect on them. Just like some scientists who claimed that a good time for a child to learn can be about age 4-5. They might not understand but when they grow older they seemed to be able to grasp the concept.

One more thing is that nowadays children are really getting smarter. I was taking class that day and I thought in the past I just started telling the young children what to do and they just follow. Reason being that many will think children can't figure what you are saying about the principles behind these movements. Just make sure they know the basic commands and stuff. I decided to talk to them. Asking them the idea behind having commands. The idea of what Taekwondo class is about. Answers such as respect came out from some of them. After sharing with them what Taekwondo is mainly about. They became more serious and show more discipline. They might still be young but they are growing smarter than we thought sometimes. Reasoning and sharing theories with them may be good for them shaping their reasoning skills since young better then when they grow older, it might be hard to get across the correct ideas to them. Good habits can be cultivated since young I supposed.

Indeed interesting are the taekwondo videos

It was indeed an enjoyable match to watch. With exciting moments when fast kicks were exchanged from the light weight category sparring match, found on the right column, one will continue to watch on. What is even more interesting is the feint motions the players have and the timing they managed to grasp to score those beautiful points. No hesitations, no delay, once lock on the target, there goes their lighting kicks. Tactically played, applying the footwork techiniques to attack, dodge from an attack and counter-attacks. Most importantly, displaying an air of confidence in their kicks. The 2004 athen olympics highlights was quite interesting as well, a beautifully axe kick executed by Olympic champion Chinese Taipei's Chu Mu Yen, jumping back hook from the men's heavyweight Olympic champion korea's Moon Dae Sung which knocked out the much taller and giantic greece player, fast double turning and more. Worth to watch if one have not.

Taekwondo today - Its development of the art and sport

Taekwondo today has also evovled into different aspects not mainly as self-defense and sparring as sport. It has also Taekwondo aerobics which is a set of movements performed by practioners accompanied along with music. Do not be surprised that even elders also take up Taekwondo aerobics to keep fit. But usually, movements for them might not be that vigorous. There is also more attention pay on demostrations like kicking of planks and pattern or poomsae.

Besides the sparring tournament, nowadays there are also pattern competitions or a combination of demostration competitions which consists of pattern, aerobics, board breaking, bricks and boards breaking and self-defense techniques. Taekwondo now have different aspects each being unique and interesting in their own ways. It is no longer only used as a self-defense but provides leisure as a sport and pleasure as demostration events.

There are perhaps some people who do not like the idea of today's Taekwondo as it seems that it has become more commercialized and might lose its traditional values. But I believe that despite these ongoing events and revolutionary changes, the basis of Taekwondo still must remain before the commencement of any activities as such. It is still about the main traditional values that a true Taekwondo practioner must hold on regardless one is actively participating in sparring, board breaking, poomsae, aerobics or a combination of everything. If not, it will be like a body without its soul. Taekwondo is not only about how well one can be in its aspects but also to understand the philosophies behind it. That, is then the true essence of Taekwondo.
